If your quilt top is not squared up before quilting, it will not be square after quilting. If this is very important to you, then I suggest taking the time to square it up. I try very hard to make sure the quilt is smooth during quilting but I will not over manipulate the quilt to force it into being "square". Another suggestion or tip is to leave borders a bit wider than the desired finished quilt to leave room for squaring up after quilting. That is totally up to you. Sometimes there is fullness in a quilt and I may use Best Press to help alleviate it. Please let me know if you wish for me to not use this.
Backing fabric needs to be 10" longer AND wider than the quilt top or 5 inches all the way around. Loading the quilt onto the frame takes up fabric and I have clamps that are on the sides. I am not wanting you to just spend more money on fabric. I promise. :) It is an essential part of longarm quilting. There will be a minimum charge of $10 if the backing is not big enough. If there is a seam in the backing it is preferred that it is sewn horizontally. I cannot guarantee that a vertical seam will be in the center of the quilt. Please make sure that all edges are straight. If using a batik backing or a stiff backing with sizing in it, please wash backing fabric and a bit of fabric softener is helpful as well.
Batting also needs to be 10" longer and wider than the quilt top. I have cotton queen size batting to purchase. Cost will vary depending on what brand I have in stock. Please provide a good quality batting if you provide it yourself. In order to insure a good quality stitch, a good quality batting is necessary.
I charge $.02 a square inch for all edge to edge quilting. There is a minimum charge of $65 for a small quilt. To figure out the cost, you multiply the width and length of the quilt in inches and then multiply that times .02. For example, a 70 x 70 inch quilt would be, 70 x 70=4900
4900 x .02=$98.00
The cost of thread is included in the quilting charge unless there is an excessive amount of stitching on a design and then there would be $5 thread charge. I pick the thread color based on the lightest color in the quilt top. In my opinion, darker thread does not look as pleasing to the eye as lighter thread colors on light colored fabric. Next, I match the bobbin thread to the top thread or make sure it coordinates. It is almost impossible to not see the top thread or bobbin thread on the top or back so I make sure the top thread and the bobbin thread are similar. So if there is a really dark backing and lighter colored top, it will have light colored thread on the back and be very noticeable. If that is something you wish to avoid, please plan accordingly in your backing choice.
